This post is a general dosage post for safe herbal remedies. Stronger and sometimes toxic herbs will have very different dosages. ALWAYS research the herbs that you are using. Poke root tincture for example is taken in a single drop. NEVER use the following dosages for Poke, and DO NOT use it for children.
Dosage varies depending on weight, size, and age of every person. Below you will find children dosages by age and adult dosages that are based on a person of about 150 pounds. Many other things can affect dosage, which includes sensitivity to food and herbs, overall health, strength of herbs used, and the actual condition being treated. The main thing you need to keep in mind, however, is if the condition is acute (short-term, that appears quickly, like a wound or cold), or chronic (slow developing and long-term conditions, like diabetes).
I am all about herbal and natural ways of doing things, but that in no way means that I am totally against allopathic (modern) medicine. Some conditions are beyond what a home herbalist can handle. There is a reason that modern medicine came to be (besides the shenanigans of Big Pharma). Some conditions that we consider minor today would have been a death sentence even 150 years ago without modern medicine. Life-threatening or worsening conditions should be looked at by a professional. Also, any conditions that are not getting better with home remedies should be looked at by a professional before they can cause chronic issues that are even harder to get rid of.
***For every year you have had a chronic illness, expect at least a month to heal it.
____________
I say all of that to also say that running to allopathic medicine at the first sign of EVERYTHING, including minor headaches, can have lasting effects on your body. Many, if not all, chronic illness medications also have horrible side-effects, (some are even worse than the condition being treated…pay attention to Rx commercials) so even if you do have to resort to allopathy to save your life, you should always be doing natural things that can help reverse the illness, or it will never go away. Diet is huge. Let your food be your medicine. Big Pharma banks on sick people, and if you dig far enough, you will find their fingers in even the food industry (i.e., processed foods). That’s why we don’t have a cure for cancer. When they cure people, they lose money. But I digress. On to today’s topic:
Suggested Dosages for Children:

2 to 4 years | 2 teaspoons |
4 to 7 years | 1 tablespoon |
7 to 12 | 2 tablespoons |
AGE | DOSAGE |
Younger than 3 months | 2 drops |
3 to 6 months | 3 drops |
6 to 9 months | 4 drops |
9 to 12 months | 5 drops |
12 to 18 months | 7 drops |
18 to 24 months | 8 drops |
2 to 3 years | 10 drops |
3 to 4 years | 12 drops |
4 to 6 years | 15 drops |
6 to 9 years | 24 drops |
9 to 12 years | 30 drops |
Suggested Dosages for Adults:
Acute Health Problems:
Acute problems are active with symptoms, so the remedy needs to work fast and effectively. This means that symptoms should improve quickly. It is better to give smaller dosages more frequently than larger doses over longer periods of time, especially if you can catch an illness at the first sign. Once disease settles into the body, it is more difficult to get rid of.
The following list is a guideline, not set rules.
- 1/4 cup herbal infusion every half hour, up to 4 cups per day.
- 1/2 to 1 teaspoon herbal syrup every 2 hours, up to 10 teaspoons a day.
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon herbal tincture every hour, up to 6 teaspoons a day.
- 1 to 2 herbal capsules or pills every 2 hours, up to 8 capsules a day.
Chronic Health Problems:
If a chronic problem is causing acute symptoms, then use the previous list and treat it acutely. In general, however, it is better to give larger doses over a longer time period for chronic conditions. The key is consistency. Take remedy at the same time each day, and follow any protocols, like diet and exercise. If you fail to do this, you can be setting yourself up for failure, or a longer treatment time than necessary. Remember, for every year of chronic illness, expect at least a month to heal. If you have had something like bad allergies for 5 years, it may take around 5 months to heal, IF you are consistent.
Chronic remedies take longer to work, but are more effective and actual heal the body, whereas pharmaceuticals only treat the symptoms, not the underlying cause of the problem. The latter can even make acute problems worse as the underlying issues worsen without treatment, which can then cause the need for more Rx, and so on and so on. And that’s not to mention having to take other medications to combat the side-effects that may come about from the first meds. I’m sure you can see the pattern.
Again, the following list is a guideline, not a rule.
- 3 to 4 cups herbal infusion daily.
- 1 to 2 tablespoons of herbal syrup twice a day, or as needed.
- 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of tincture 2 to 3 times a day, up to 3 teaspoons per day.
- 2 to 3 capsules or pills 2 to 3 times a day, and up to 6 capsules per day.
Even though consistency is a must, you should still take a break once a week, not because herbs will build up or have toxic side effects, but rather to let your system rest.
