Happy Birthday to me!
I turned 32 on Wednesday and am not even mad about it. I like even numbers, and I kept thinking I was already 32 the entire time I was 31, so yeah.
I’ve been working on rewriting ‘The Wild Assault’ in the third person, and I was surprised to learn that Chapter 1 alone was 3,702 words. It will inevitably go up in editing as I add descriptions and more details, but I’m refusing to let myself do that for the moment. I need to get what I started done first. I can easily fall into an ‘edit-it-to-death’ phase without even having finished a story.
The chapters I have rewritten are in the present tense, but I had a revelation Wednesday night that they should be in the past tense for reasons concerning the ending. I’ll have to redo the chapters I have gotten done, which means more work, but it has sparked my excitement again for this story, which was waning a little. With that excitement, there will inevitably come more words soon that aren’t rewrites.
Writing a prequel is something I have never done, so this entire thing is a learning process. Not to mention, I don’t use an outline. I write notes I always misplace or forget about, but the good ideas stick around.
“I think the writer’s notebook is the best way to immortalize bad ideas.”
Stephen King
That King quote is slowly becoming one of my favorites as I keep trying to write stuff down but never use it. He even mentioned that the good ideas stick around, and the bad ones fade. I am not the biggest fan of Stephen’s book, but I love his advice. Weird, I know, but I’ve never been too much into horror.
Let me know if you have any of his books you think I should read!
I have started trying to read more, but it is rereading older favorites. I’m currently rereading ‘City of Fallen Angels’ by Cassandra Claire because I am a sucker for mid-2000s YA fiction. A guilty pleasure that will endure into old age, I am sure. I plan on rereading ‘City of Lost Souls’ and then reading ‘City of Heavenly Fire’ for the first time since I lost touch before it was released to finish The Mortal Instruments series. And yes, I am aware of all the scandals concerning her writing. I don’t even care. I’ve watched all the YouTube videos about it and am only intrigued enough to read more.
I had a little mishap with Etsy earlier this week, but the shop is back up and running! Click here to check it out, and you’ll get FREE SHIPPING on orders of $35 or more.
Many blessings,
Emma Lee Joy
